 General

Food is required for survival - as you regenerate less health/stamina while hungry/thirsty (read about your Character). Most crafting recipes require a certain quality tier of meal to be consumed while working on it. Also your character will refuse to craft in general if he is extremely hungry or thirsty. You might have to eat some food manually to craft new snacks.

Vegetables and eggs can be gathered (link) in the wild as well as grown by farming (link). Animals for meat can be hunted (link) or bred, fish can be fished (link).

Snacks and Meals need to be prepared in a kitchen and require cooking skill depending on tier. They are made from core, base and side ingredients, which can be crafted from basic ingredients. Prepared food is generally more efficient in reducing hunger and thirst than its ingredients, but will also decay a lot faster than the non processed components. An efficient cook will have to find an optimal balance here to minimize food usage.
